From 29 November to 6 December 2025, Phuket’s Kata Beach transforms into the epicentre of Asian sailing, as the prestigious Phuket King’s Cup Regatta celebrates its 37th edition, recently crowned “Asia’s Best Sailing Event” at the 2025 Yacht Style Awards.
A Royal Legacy
Founded in 1987 to commemorate His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th birthday, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta has grown into Asia’s premier yachting event. Run under the stewardship of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, it represents royal tradition and international sport.
Who Attends
The event welcomes a diverse and elite fleet, from professional world-class crews and regional teams to experienced amateurs and families eager to test their skills. Each year, more than 90 boats and 2,000 sailors representing over 20 nations converge on Phuket, vying for coveted trophies across multiple classes.
The Racing
Regatta week features up to twelve intensely competitive races, including coastal, windward/leeward, triangle, and youth dinghy events, all set against Phuket’s stunning coastline.
Key Classes: Keelboats, multihulls, one-design sports boats, optimists, monohull cruisers, and liveaboard classes.
Noteworthy Races: Handicapped divisions allow diverse yachts to compete, while dedicated youth and inclusive disabled sailing classes highlight the regatta’s community focus.
The racing combines sailing skill and strategy, with changing winds, currents, and tropical weather adding complexity. The week also includes a reserve day on 4 December and, each evening, prize givings and shoreline celebrations at Beyond Kata Resort & Spa, culminating in a Royal Awards Ceremony.
Social Scene & Community
The regatta is renowned for its social calendar. Beach barbecues, gala dinners, live music, and networking events make it a highlight for Thailand’s social and business communities. The event is underpinned by charity partnerships and a renewed focus on sustainability, reinforcing its positive impact on Phuket’s tourism and economy.
Royal Patronage & Iconic Moments
Royal involvement remains central; this year, Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana will sail aboard Vayu TH 72, continuing a tradition in which His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn has helmed the same yacht in previous editions, a highlight for competitors and spectators.
Notable Past Winners
The regatta’s hall of fame includes international and Thai champions:
- Team Vayu (skippered by Kevin Whitcraft) posted a dramatic victory last year.
- Serial winners: Ray Roberts’ Team Hollywood, Rolf Heemskerk’s Jessandra II, and Nick Burns’ Witchcraft.
- Junior classes and women’s divisions continue to produce rising stars in Asian sailing.
